NRG Safety

NRG Safety

READ THIS FIRST:

Each independent researcher in NRG must complete the NRG Safety Exam. It consists of 3 stages, detailed below. Note that this test is taken at your pace. Meaning you tell the group when you are ready to take each part. NO RUSH.

The first stage of the test is for you to stop by Dr. Nino’s office or in the group meeting (preferred) where we will ask you 6 questions (two on lab safety, two on waste management, and two on NRG procedures). These documents are labeled 0, 1, and 2 on the side bar. Understanding these documents extremely well is key to passing the safety quiz.

You have to answer 5 of the 6 questions correctly to pass. You are welcome to ask the group members about the exam.

The second stage is for you to identify at least one “safety problem/violation” in each of the labs 208 and 256.  That is, identify one aspect/issue in each of the labs that is not being done following the guidelines and/or that is in conflict with the regulations you have studied. For each issue identify, take a picture, coordinate with the NRG member escorting you to the labs so that the issue is resolved, and email the group informing about the situation including the resolution.  There is a PowerPoint located on the side menu with lab safety violation examples to prepare. Once the issues have been resolved you will be cleared to the third stage. Part 2 is completed when the issues are fixed and posted on the safety channel in slack.

The third and final stage of the exam is for you to identify at least one item that is not listed in the equipment list, a chemical that is in the labs but not on the inventory, or an inconsistency in these guidelines and any of the training documents, etc. Update the document (or if it’s a website inconsistency create an excerpt that can be copy-pasted) and send it to Marion Hagstrom. You should also update it on the group drive and post it on the safety channel. After presenting all of this to the group within a group meeting, you will have passed the 3-part safety exam.

More information on the safety exam can be found in 0) NRG Procedures. It is important to read and understand all safety literature. I recommend that you start going over the documents in the order numbered, starting with zero and let Dr. Nino know when you have processed them.

Members of NRG must also complete online safety training via myTraining UF:
  • UF_EHS863_OLT New Researcher Overview of EHS (1.3)
  • UF_EHS861_OLT Chem Hygiene Plan (1.4)
  • EHS809_OLT Hazardous Waste Management (1.4)

Navigate the tabs for all relevant documents and let Dr. Nino or anyone in NRG know if you have questions.

Once you review everything, here is a study guide made by Kiara Xhindi. It is not meant to encompass everything that will be asked on the exam, just a way for you to measure your understanding of the material: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ztl51FvBoOM08VJj4w8kT6eIis4iIxfU5C7HS6xnbPQ/edit?usp=sharing
